Dubai's tap water comes from desalinated seawater processed by DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) and meets WHO and GSO 149 standards. The Jebel Ali complex alone produces over 490 million imperial gallons per day using Multi-Stage Flash distillation and Seawater Reverse Osmosis. Water is chlorinated for distribution safety and remineralized with calcium and magnesium. At the treatment plant, water is 100% safe. However, building-level storage tanks and internal plumbing can introduce sediment, bacteria, or off-flavors if not properly maintained. Dubai's drinking water is sourced almost entirely (99%) from desalinated Arabian Gulf seawater, with only about 1% coming from groundwater. The critical variable in Dubai is the last-mile infrastructure. Water travels from DEWA mains into building rooftop storage tanks, which in Dubai's extreme heat (with tank temperatures reaching 60C in summer) can foster bacterial growth including Legionella and Pseudomonas if not regularly cleaned. Dubai Municipality mandates tank cleaning every six months, but compliance varies. Old pipes can leach trace amounts of lead, iron, and copper. For this reason, installing a point-of-use carbon or reverse osmosis filter is common practice among residents, primarily for taste improvement and as a precaution rather than necessity.

Travelers to Dubai can safely drink tap water in modern hotels and well-maintained buildings. The water is desalinated, chlorinated, and tested to WHO standards by DEWA.
